The thing is there are just too many teams in the VA/DC area just to have one league. This is not MLS where you can have 26 teams and play down to a winner. It doesn't even work all that well for them now. You can reshuffle the decks all you want, but the same good players will be the same good players. I would like to see more players and parents taking pride in their local club and league whether it be ECNL or CCL. That is what we are missing here. They are playing soccer. If your child is really good they will get a shot no matter what. No college coach who is a student of the game is gong to take a crap player just because they play in a better league.
The problem is that kids need good coaches, good teammates and strong competition to develop. So if the kids stay on their local teams they will never develop to their full potential, never become as good as they could, and this they may well miss on their shot. Even for college - let alone the pros. And yes - of course - most won't even sniff the pros. But you can't pick out the ones that will at 9, or 13, or even 16. Heck even Manchester City and Barcelona can't identify at 16 which kids will make the pros - most of the kids in their academies don't make it. So it is perfectly reasonable for a hundred kids to want to try, even though only one will make it. And so those 100 kids need to find the best coach, the best teammates, and the best competition they can.
I'm fairly certain I can pick out the DMV kids who won't make the pros with 99.99% accuracy (hint- all of them)
