He made a lot of money, though. Apparently for a lot of people on this thread, you can be a sh&t human being, but if you make a ton of money doing it, that's worth looking up to.
So far they haven’t offered that up as an excuse, but they have claimed he was a good American (no proof offered for that outlandish claim).
He was praised in this thread for having "DOMINATED the medium of radio for over a THIRD of the time it’s existed," and for going out "on top" as "The King of Talk Radio," and being "the most successful radio show host in American history." Being that successful in talk radio comes with a lot of money, and the need for tax breaks. He was also lauded in this thread for a donation of $100,000, which was just 0.02% of his net worth. Not 2%, but two hundredths of a percent. When I was making $40,000 annually, that would have been $8. Nobody would laud me for that sacrifice, but they would him -- solely because he made a lot of money for the shock value of the ugly parts out loud. And the tax break on $100,000 provides a lot of personal financial incentive that will never come with a $8 donation. That's worth looking up to, apparently.
Didn't he benefit from the Fairness Doctrine being repealed in the Reagan years?
He did. There was also a time, around when Al Franken started Air America, when liberal talk show hosts were not able to get on the air despite their having higher ratings than the right wing douche bags on their channels. Rush succeeded because there was always a thumb on the scale for him. His first job in radio was at a station that had been part owned by his dad. I don’t know if his dad was still the part owner, but he definitely knew the people. So basically Rush only succeeded because of affirmative action for doughy white boys.
