GA will become a better version of CCL. Change my mind.
100%. But it will take a couple of years and a migration of players. And it’s not like ECNL is heavenly. there are some real concerns there regarding how they plan to structure showcasing opportunities with 120+ teams. Girls who play on teams that are low in their conferences won’t have the showcasing opportunities that girls who play on teams that are top of the conference. 2022 or 2023 DCUM threads around tryout time won’t be about ECNL v GA anymore, but they WILL be about which ECNL teams are ‘worth it’ and which are not. i do think that is an open question answered by a combination of coaching and development and location. I think it’s funny that people keep bringing up that BRYC had a national championship when the coaches that built that team are gone. Past performance is no guarantee of future performance.
Showcasing opportunities have, and I suspect will continue to be better for higher performing teams because there is a natural draw effect that goes on when two competitive teams face off. Nationals has been the only showcase that was limited in the past, but ECNL has added the open cup layer to nationals, so that every team can attend now. I think you're right about the showcasing format affecting the value at some point. To a college scout, the value of the showcase is alot of high level players at one event, but there are practical limits to how many games you can squeeze into a weekend. Most of these venues are fully consumed already by the national events. If COVID has taught us one thing it's that they need to add events and regionalize them. There really is very little need for "national" showcases because most players tend to target schools in their region anyway, and ECNL is aware of the effect of rising travel costs. I could see them adding a handful of events and expanding on the open cup concept and allowing in the higher performing RL teams. YMMV on whether that is a good or bad thing.
