It's sad that Charles and Camilla brought this 19 year old girl into their terrible situation without full disclosure. Diana thought she was getting a real marriage and a real husband when she said yes. Then it was too late. Charles and Camilla should have stopped their affair once he got married. Diana would still have been imperfect but for someone with her insecurities, the rejection and cheating was intolerable.
+1 And where was her mother or someone who could truthfully level with her about what this marriage would actually be like? She really had no one to advise her at all. I was so angry when the queen and Philip called a meeting with Charles and Diana and the queen called Diana out on her affairs - but not one word to Charles about his *mistress*. She did call him out in private when it was just the two of them, but she should have spoken up in front of Diana instead of making only Diana apologize and promise to do better. Sheesh - what about Charles? Though I have to wonder whether these conversations actually took place. That’s something we’ll never know.
She wasn't that close to her mother. Her mother and father divorced while the kids were still quite young.
She spent some of her childhood in London with her mother but her father intervened and she ended up back in the country with him and her dreadful stepmother. He got custody because he was nobility and her mother wasn’t. And that definitely affected her in the negotiations for her separation and divorce. I just finished the season last night and it is very good. Agree with PPs that they did a lot to promote sympathy for Charles but he was still such a villain in the end. “You’re so beautiful and good at your job that my mistress is mad she can’t compete with you!!!” is not an OK thing to say to your wife. And I also recommend the You’re Wrong About podcasts. So good.
