Why should she feel guilty? She was just trying to do the best she could for her kids. You're just jealous that you can't afford to do the same.
This makes a mockery of the idea that college admissions are somehow based on merit. Do you think that people should be able to buy a degree without putting in the work? That’s not how any of this is supposed to work.
What world do you live in?! Can I live there with you pls. America is run by money. You can buy anything if you have enough money. Degrees are bought everyday by the rich. I don’t understand how ppl can seriously be so upset about this but not care that rich ppl pay for their kids to get into and graduate college with donations. Guess what, that degree was paid for without putting in work. The only ppl upset by this are ppl who are in denial that America only cares about money.
Oh, I am well aware of this. And it disgusts me. It is wrong and we need to fight it, not normalize it. It IS a big deal that people feel so entitled to buy things they didn’t earn and that institutions let them get away with it.
People will say that donating (essentially buying a seat) isn't the same thing because the donation benefits the school, facilities, academics, etc. There's probably only a fairly small percentage of donors who can outright buy admission for their child through legal means (I'm guessing). The US isn't a meritocracy, but it's not a free for all either. The difference here is that individuals personally, financially benefited from bribes vs. an institution where the bribe is spread out to benefit the school community (i.e. the ends justify the means). I don't think it means that donors (buying admission) and people like Lori L. are all that much different from one another- they are both using money to buy something their children didn't earn.
