Oh I so wish this would happen. I heard one of the mid-level grade teaching teams at our ES had to talk to the kindergarten and first grade teachers about handwriting and spelling because they could no longer read the work that their students were turning in. The K and 1st teachers said that they didn't have time to teach handwriting and spelling because of all the other requirements placed on their day.
What a difference a few years and technology makes! When I taught first, handwriting was the first thing we did every morning. Kids copied from the board and did other quiet work (math practice, some type of science/social studies activity, etc.) while I taught reading groups. This was the model when I was a child, too. Kids were free to go to centers and find other activities when they were through with their work--but, if they were too noisy, I would cut out the chatter. It was an effective model.
