Maybe, but I think the whole situation was cruel to all of them.  Charles and Camilla clearly have a great love, and Charles and Diana were clearly very badly suited to each other. They were all trapped in an untenable situation. I posted above about Diana’s mental health. Charles certainly could have been more compassionate, but given his upbringing and all the abuse he suffered at that boarding school, I don’t think he had the emotional tools to deal with her.

King Edward had a great love for Wallis Simpson but she was considered unfit due to her being a divorcee and Edward abdicated to marry her. Elizabeth’s father became monarch and subsequently, Elizabeth. Charles would never have been Prince of Wales otherwise. Camilla was also considered unfit because she was not a virgin. That’s the thing, though. Edward abdicated, and it almost brought down the monarchy. I think there was a reasonable expectation that a repeat of that would be a death blow.  Charles did his duty and married someone deemed appropriate. It was a disaster. I don’t think either Charles or Diana or anyone else was able to foresee what a monumental disaster it would be.

Diana was a compassionate person.  I think if she got to a good place in her life, she would have been forgiving and made peace with Charles. The fact that she could still recognize his good parenting suggests that she wasn’t completely consumed with anger and resentment.  It’s a shame she never got the chance.[/quote]
