I don't understand why you guys are coming down on OP so hard. OP, ignore half of these posts, especially the mean-spirited name calling ones. How old are you? 90 k really isn't a lot of money for this area. It would've been nice of you to help out your gf if you were comfortable with doing so but you were not. So there's that. How in the world did she run up 8 k in credit card debt alone? If she's fiscally irresponsible, you really did dodge a bullet. Helping her out wouldn't have done much. You could've paid off her entire bill and she could've found herself in even more debt just weeks later. Also, finances are the #1 cause of divorce. So if she's going to be a financial drain, it's good to cut ties now...On the other hand, she's a student who could have great future earning potential. Then again, even with a great income, if she's financially irresponsible it's a waste. Better to end it now than later. Between her financial irresponsibility and depression, maybe you're better off.
You're so weird. We're talking about 2 people who have been together for 3 years. 8k really isn't that bad.
+1 She clearly ran up credit card debt trying to have a life with back-to-back vacations to keep up with OP. People on 26k grad student salary don't do that, can't do that. OP obviously did not respect that fact and just lived the grad student life with her if he really loved her, but nope. Instead he patted himself on the back for paying for parts of her trips and food, and felt it was fair and reasonable to expect her to contribute some of the money when clearly she had NO disposable income. He wanted to sleep with a young woman, but he didn't want to live the lifestyle of young woman. He is exploitative.
