OooO! I actually have some straight up tea/boots on the ground, people. After college, I worked for Pat Field as a wardrobe assistant on this show. I essentially was a seamstress and spent a ton of time shopping for vintage things that Pat would declare garbage until I eventually would stumble on a few workable pieces. In terms of tailoring, first of all, the women all of them were tiny. I spent hours tailoring outfits on the principals (and others). First, Kristin Davis is a sweetheart. She was always so, so nice. Second, Catrell was professional and quiet. She was appreciative of the time we took and was very respectful. Cynthia hated the amount of the it took to tailor things and eventually worked it out with Pat to avoid tailored outfits as much as possible (btw that's one reason her clothes were a mess). SJP...well, she was the boss. Everything was contingent on her approval and if she didn't like it, you were in trouble with Pat. If you were too slow, you got in trouble. If you were too chatty, too familiar, etc. She was not what I'd call nice, but she was very serious. In terms of social dynamics, from what I saw SJP and Nixon were close. Davis was sort of friendly with everyone and Catrall and SJP/Nixon did not get along. At all.
Fascinating! Are there any particular outfits or pieces that you found that were used on the show? I'm so lame that I remember almost every outfit, and would love to give you a virtual high five for your work. That is so cool!
There were a few. I tailored Catrall's bathing suit in the rooftop party with drag queens for example. I did a lot of the tailoring for SJP because she was so small that 00's didn't fit her well. I found the vintage nightgown she wore when she was shooting and hiding her pregnancy. It's was flowy and very chiffon. I love working with Field, but the show was not a happy place. The days were extremely long, people were snappish and it was always faster, faster, faster. A girl can only sew something so quickly. I left fashion and went to business school and having a boring DC area job now. But it was an interesting chapter. NY was in a weird spot at the time.
It must have been hard to make clothes fit SJP's tiny, tiny frame and sizeable chest. She has a really unique physique in that regard.
