Love Hawaii.. born and raised.. love the food.. love the perks.. but..
(a) too expensive.  Think D.C. housing / food prices with none of the 'cost-shortcuts'; 
(b) distance.  Check your loved ones if they can afford to fly out; 
(c) taxes.  Don't forget, they tax retirement income.  If you don't have a cool 2M banked, may not be that great an option for you; 
(d) healthcare.  City is top notch - but expensive.  Country may or may not have the services you need nearby (ex. long-term care); 
(e) Age difference.  What you want when you're 0-50 may not be the same as 50-100.

Like the kids?  Better to live close and take a nice vacation, to locations of your choice with the family.

No kids?  Find someplace cheap, with adult daycare, and good medical nearby.  Use your money to travel where you want to go.

In between?  Live there short term than move - just watch costs if you're not independently wealthy.[/quote]
