The contributions of young, illegal central American immigrants to ultraviolent crime and misdemeanor in our area cannot be denied. I cannot say I'm shocked. Twenty years ago I worked with the middle wave of Salvadoran and central American children brought over by parents fleeing the civil war. There is no intake process and while their parents work day and night they are left to the Latin kings 18th street gang Ms 13 and of course our fine public schools to be raised. Honestly, if we are going to offer sanctuary we should also offer the programming to calibrate these children to our civic norms and fight gang influence. Otherwise, they should go home and we should offer aid to these central American countries to battle gang violence and develop their own civil societies. Simply accepting them and thinking they'll integrate just because is stupid. The same goes for many poor, undereducated (my teen students were functionally illiterate) struggling populations coming to the US from places of strife.
The suspect is a 22 year old man. I assume that he is not a HS student but these days you never know. An older person like that should be in adult education assuming he is going to school at all.
I have no idea if he's in school and it's rather beside the point, but legally, if you are a special needs student (and being ELL qualifies you as such) you are entitled to attend public school until 23.
So you are saying that the this 22 year old man (undocumented, on ICE list) could have been a HS student?
Potentially, yes. Students with disabilities can remain in the school system until 23. This ranges from down syndrome to truly speaking no English. I have no idea if he was but yes it's possible. -teacher
Do schools do any sort of criminal background check on adult students? Do they do any sort of check to see if they are documented?
You think schools do criminal background checks on all students 18 or older? Do you know how many white kids have possession charges at 18?
I know it gets you expelled in our district. Also, no, school districts do not check documentation. It seems like something that has been repeated so many times, I'm surprised that PP didn't know. Maybe she just temporarily forgot. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Plyler_v._Doe
I'm pp and I honestly did not know that the school does not check documentation of ADULT students. If they don't do any sort of check, how do they know that the incoming student is "only" 23. How do they know that the student isn't 28? Serious question.
DP here. They have no idea. This was a huge point of discussion when the Rockville HS rape case was being discussed. MCPS does not require documentation. Also, it is very easy to come up with fake documentation in these countries. So even having actual documentation does not mean the kid/man is the actual age he said. Many of these men/boys coming into the country illegally already know how to work the system to their advantage. Instead of being forced to go out and get a job, they know they can enroll in the schools, get 2 free meals, learn English for free and have access to younger students in case they are involved in a gang (access to more potential members).
Generally, these adult HS students are in a different building, not in the same classes with children who are the usual age.
How many high schools have complete separate buildings for these adults? If an undocumented 28 year old could lie and say he's 23. What is to stop an undocumented 23 year old from lying and saying he's 18?
