They are indeed, and this is not meant as a defense of them, but: it’s not like they have a choice, you know? That’s the kind of fealty that the cult requires of women toward the men in their life (and what the GOP wants for women in the wider culture). Michelle seems like a true believer but even for her she has to do this performative dance. And Anna especially is dependent on her in laws for monetary support.

Some people can break out of cults and some can’t. I’m not going to read the letters cause I don’t care all that much but from the excerpts here - Michelle is damning her son with faint praise. They’re doing the (stupid) dance required by their (stupid) cult.[/quote]
