Thank you for the thoughtful post. The background on the prep school world is interesting, and I loved this phrase: "the prior poster showed some manners problems." What a civilized way to put it!
You're welcome. I hope what I contribute is a perspective worth taking in as an inside opinion. It pained and disgusted me to serve the last year as a trustee in spring 2014 at a top NE boarding school I also attended and earlier sent two kid through. Ten years ago I would have endorsed with enthusiasm making the financial sacrifice to have a kid attend one of the Big 4 or the Group of 10, but now the ones who do a high volume PG years and take in a high volume of repeat 11th graders have changed that. Today if a kid is a good enough athlete in lacrosse, and is pledged to Duke, Notre Dame, UVA, or another strong university boarding schools want to patronize that. Those are full paying families with kids who are bespoke to colleges that certainly won't hurt the college matriculation tables and in fact make for no maintenance or efforts by the boarding schools to make a difference for a kid to place into a good college. It's a good business decision in terms of the fiscal side, but I also served with one trustee who had a son play lacrosse at this same prep. He was a good player but never got to play as a junior or as a senior. His senior year there were 7 PGs at attack all pledged to top college programs. Imagine having junior go to Landon and wait his turn only to never play for that reason, and then also imagine paying twice as much for tuition and boarding. It has ruined the psyche of young people involved in sports, and is a callous way for an institution to be administered. I went to the Deerfield Andover game last spring to see a colleagues son's game and wanted to throw up in my mouth. Half the kids in his senior day picture were hit and run PG kids finishing up a repeat year with little buy in to the school or the program (the body language made this obvious to us all), and the boy only got into his senior day game for one possession because the team was in a tight game and wanted to keep the future Duke and Notre Dame players out there. This only validated my disdain for how hard these schools have fallen for a sports based business model. It is very sad.
