They hired a friend who he played with in college as a money manager, he lost a bunch of the money and stole a bunch more, and after he confessed to Juan he killed himself.  He was scamming other people too.

It's actually pretty common for sports stars to make really ill-advised decisions with money management and with keeping friends/family on payroll, in ways that hurt them long-term.  Seems like Juan did both at once.[/quote]
