Here's my question. Why aren't Asians doing this? I don't see rioting in Korean/Vietnamese communities. Latin folks either. The black community isn't doing itself favors by doing this. --signed An Asian...
Exactly. Not only are the rioters behaving in such a way as to promote negative feelings toward blacks, they are actually showing why police fear them, and, on rare occasion, act too hastily. Anyone remember the white cop in Baltimore who was hesitant to shoot a black thug because of the Freddie Grey case, delayed a fraction of a second, and was killed by the thug? These are split-second, life-and-death decisions when dealing with someone who defies police orders, and errors will be made.
There is a major difference between asian or even latino community and black community. Asians are generally at the high end of income spectrum and they have so much to lose in terms of reputation, family, career if they behave badly. They dont feel disenfranchised. They don't have the bad memory of slavery and jim crow to distrust everything a white man says and does. The same reason applies to Latinos even though economically they are at the same level as blacks. Latinos dont feel disenfranchised. But the black community feels disenfranchised, harassed and mistrusted by the rest of the country. They have nothing to look forward to. They feel hopeless and desperate. The memories of racism and Jim crow keeps coming back and they feel the past can become present if they are not watchful and protest every wrong. They are very sensitive and very distrusting of the system because they feel it never works for them. Do not think life is the same for everyone because they inhabit the same country. Our lives are lived mostly in our mind and in many ways we are prisoners of the past. As much the blacks are fearful of the past, the whites run away from the past to the point of denying the past or totally minimizing the past and its long term negative impact on the black community.
