He's already preparing with his new house and decked out kids' rooms to show himself as a stable parental figure vs someone that doesn't own a home and has a tendency to flare her temper.

She needs to recover and then get herself back to school or into the workforce. Unfortunately, it seems she thinks she and Thomas might still have chance.
