11:15 - we saw a lot of that in the U9 tryouts - the late 2008 birthdays went to kindergarten a full year later than the earlier 2008 birthdays, so they have had two fewer seasons of rec league soccer. My kid is a good soccer player compared to many of the kids she plays against (and with), but she looked outplayed at travel tryouts against kids who'd played two more seasons but were technically the same age. We didn't know any other 1st grade girls who tried out for travel, and only one of the 1st grade boys we know who tried out made it. I think a lot of folks also just aren't ready for the travel commitment when their kid is 7 and in 1st grade. That seems so early to specialize. Did other teams have a low number of girls trying out? Arlington had an unusually low number of girls at both travel and ADP tryouts for the U9 group.
Our club also had a very low number of U9 girls trying out (and we also have a rec program in house). We went from four teams to two based on who came in and their skill level - and not everyone was given an offer as not everyone was ready to play. One of the coaches was chalking it up to the birth year change - you have to be very plugged in to soccer in general at U7 to make that jump to U9 and understand that it's a slight age shift as opposed to your daughter playing up. We had maybe two that were coming from U7, and the rest are from the U8 group. That said, we saw a similar thing on the boys side, there's one less team than they anticipated having.
