I am not advocating poisoning anyone's dog. I used to work at a vet's office, and it was not uncommon for dogs to come in with poisoning and the owner would say they were worried about a neighbor who really hated their dog. It happens, so I don't understand why all you dog lovers would advocate that OP go to war with her neighbor over the dog's right to poop on other people's yards. It makes all the rest of us conscientious dog owners look terrible.
I think most of us dog lovers aren't advocating going to war. I think most of us - at least in my experience - would prefer not to have a confrontation. And I also think your story proves why poisoning is not only horrific and illegal, but not effective. Because the dogs don't know that a criminal neighbor trying to kill them means they shouldn't poop on that yard. And the owners can't be sure what's going on. So just put up a fence. Or a sign. Or a sprinkler. Something that might actually have the effect everyone wants without the police getting involved.
I agree. I love my dogs but I have no idea of someone is sitting at their window silently seething inside their home as my dog and I walk by their house on our daily walk..plotting to put poison outside the next time. That is really unhinged and no need to allow yourself to get to that point. Put a damn sign out, turn your sprinkler on. I'm just out enjoying the fresh air and sunshine...getting in some exercise with my 4 legged family member. You have no right to hurt either one of us.
Sigh. The neighbor was not silently seething. She confronted the OP and said that she didn't want the dog pooping on her yard. Now, if OP decides that she doesn't care and will continue to allow the dog to poop all over the woman's yard, then she is the one who is escalating the situation. Honestly, I don't get the disconnect from all these dog owners who are adamant that they're not doing anything wrong or hurting anyone and are just minding their own business and lawfully enjoying the sunshine.....when they're letting their dogs poop on other people's property. Setting aside the squirrel poop and the poison and the pepper spray and the fact that the grass was already janky because they don't use roundup and the consistency of your dog's poop and all the other noise that has been brought into the discussion--you are allowing your leashed pet to drop feces on someone else's property. Just because there is a minimal impact in your opinion in no way makes it just fine and dandy to do.
