Oh, but there's more. As another example, I would also have to take my kids out of FCPS, where -- in the dark of the night -- the school board or whoever runs the show there -- is trying to institute single sex bathrooms in case one questioning, possibly transgendered 8 year old (who also happens to have a couple of publicity/ litigation happy parents) decides to make a scene about feeling "uncomfortable."  (Reference: DCUM, of course!)

NP. Shut up. I can't stand the idea that this one group of suffering individuals is so much more oppressed then other suffering groups. There is some really horrible stuff happening, especially to young people. Let's not act like there is some special fragility to the gay, trans crowd. Sympathy for all, I say.[/quote]

Of course sympathy for anyone suffering. But the fact is that the suicide rate among trans young people is incredibly high. So yes, there is actually evidence of fragility that is actually acted upon in the trans community. That's just a fact. I don't understand why that produces such anger in you to the point that you tell another person to shut up. But the fact that you're nasty isn't surprising. [/quote]

You ever think these suicides are connected to internal turmoil and not what we do or don't do for these groups? And the suicide rate is high across the board for teens, not just the transgendered ones. Or do you care about those who are desperate for reasons other than sexual/gender orientation? Stop being counterproductive. The conversation should be about supporting all young people in pain, not just the trendy ones.[/quote]

If you actually read up on the link between suicide and transgender youth, it is very closely related to how they are treated. The bullying. The rejection from families. All of it. So no, I'm sorry that you don't seem to want to see that but the truth is what it is. And this is a thread about the issues facing transgender folks, not "those who are desperate for reasons other than sexual/gender orientation." The lack of discussion about that as a whole on THIS thread is in no way an indication of what people think about that because it's not the discussion at hand here. I'm simply staying on topic. You are, I'm sure, more than welcome to start a thread on issues facing young people today. I'm sure there are quite a few people who would love to talk about that. [/quote]

And I would argue that this thread is about teaching our kids not to judge anyone. This isn't the transgendered folks 15 minutes, as much as you and tabloid media want it to be. The bullying of people who are gay or transgendered is no more important to address than the subject of bullying, period. It's when we start carving out special victim groups and placing their suffering as more pressing than others that we lose the message.
