Marquette University in Wisconsin...judge away, DCUM.
I am from the Chicago area and had a lot of friends go to Marquette - they all loved it! I agree it is a great choice for a DC area kid.
Ha :D thanks for the reassurance. I just thought it was funny how it combined some of the things often looked down on on this site - Catholic, not Ivy or anywhere near equivalent, and in the dreaded flyover part of the country. All kidding aside, he loved the campus, loves the idea of going somewhere a little different for college, and they had the direct admit physical therapy program he wanted. So yup, I agree it's a good choice for him!
There are some ridiculous posters on DCUM who look down on anything that's not HPY, Stanford or MIT (Columbia & Brown might be acceptable to them, too  ). Don't mind them -- Marquette is a very good school that the majority of students could only dream of being admitted to & it sounds like it's the perfect fit for him! Congratulations to your son!
I'll post where my kids are. One at University of North Florida. One at Ole Miss. One at University of Florida. Very proud of all of them. My student at University of North Florida is on a full academic scholarship. Everything is covered - tuition, fees, dorms, books.... She just got accepted to a really neat Masters Program. She'll be teaching English in China for two years. They are paying for her Masters Degree, paying her a salary, and paying all of her living expenses. She's a special ed major who wants to get her masters in speech path. My kid at Ole Miss is a political science major. He's on an ROTC Scholarship. My University of Florida student is pre-med. He has a partial academic scholarship. The rest is covered by Bright Futures. Super proud of all three of them! It's costing us almost nothing. They'll graduate with no student loan debt. I'm just hoping the other two can follow that example. Not every kids cares about going to prestigious schools. For what it's worth, my daughter is a national merit scholar. She turned down Yale.
Very southern for this area. What led your kids to southern schools? Do you have family in FL?
We do. And we are back and forth between D.C. and Florida every few years. One of them has always been a HUGE Gator fan. He's been saying he wanted to go to UF since middle school. We honestly didn't think he would get in. My University of North Florida kid visited the campus at the suggestion of a friend of mine who is a college dean. She visited once and fell in love with the campus. It's built on a nature preserve. It's relatively small and very quiet. And she has a lazy river running through her dorm. It's close to shopping and restaurants and of course, the beach. She loves it! My Ole Miss kid went there because so many family have graduated from University of Mississippi. He grew up with "Hotty Toddy". He is a smart kid, but his grades certainly did not reflect his test scores. It's been a good fit for him. He's very into the football/party culture. My high schooler is leaning towards either Florida or University of Georgia. The reason I posted was because I felt like everyone was posting top colleges and didn't want parents of high schoolers to feel like it was an all or nothing deal. My kids have done great at their chosen schools. I want parents (especially the type in the D.C. area) to know that it really is o.k. if your kid doesn't go to a super prestigious school. Those schools are great for some kids. But even kids like my daughter who could have gone anywhere don't necessarily find that that's what they want.
