It was not clear that the OP was "drinking to excess"...that whole assumption has kind of wormed it's way in and changed things. I know a shit-ton of highly functional, highly successful people who smoke weed and get a little drunk regularly.  They don't abuse their children (or other personal relationships) or cause office drama or fail to perform in other aspects of life.

I recognize that there are Al-Anon and AA and NA types (all of whom share a particular brand of rigid, circular thinking) who will vehemently disagree with me and I will never persuade them.  These people argue that "one drop" is the same as being at the end of the slippery slope down in the septic tank.  I don't expect to persuade them.  I personally don't choose to live in a black-and-white world.

In addition to being surrounded by highly successful role models, who poured me a few, I've also had plenty of dysfunctional substance abusers in my life.  I've also had a few dysfunctional and emotionally dysregulated teetotalers, and you know what the common thread was? (Hint: not substance abuse!)  It was being head cases.  I'm sorry this will hurt the fee-fees of the headcases who want to blame it all on demon rum (or some other external locus of control - $deity forbid a human should be responsible, we are all, afterall powerless, aren't we? Before some kind of "Higher Power", right? Talk about magical thinking!).

I think you're twisting this into a conflict of liberalism and uptightness that it was never meant to be.  No one is talking about a glass of wine at dinner as the end of the world, or arguing that one drop is the same as drunk on the floor on your face.  The issue with drinking - realizing, of course, that in this particular case it was a troll story, and now we're just talking generalities - is that once you drink too much, your judgment is no longer reliable.  In the immortal words of Mike Tyson's character, we all do dumb shit when we get fucked up. I'm sure you've seen successful people who quietly drink themselves to sleep on their couches; that's not at all the issue. The issue is that many, many people are capable of doing things when drunk that they regret doing when sober. I don't think you can question that.

In addition, one should abstain from bringing it into the workplace not because they are ruled by low-EQ people, but because of the very same reason: when you're drunk to excess, our judgment suffers. I don't need people with bad judgment at work.  If someone on my team takes a group of clients out to a work dinner and gets shitfaced, it reflects poorly on the whole organization.  If someone on my team gets drunk to excess on that type of an event, and hooks up with the client, with whom we have all kinds of financial entanglements, I can no longer trust his or her judgment that they will be impartial when dealing with the client and looking after their integrity.  In fact, I can pretty much guarantee they'd be off the team and likely out of a job. There is a good reason why they don't allow even married people to work on the same team or report to the same manager.  Sex and the workplace don't mix.[/quote]
