Jews who are middle-aged and older grew up in the shadow of the Holocaust and the Arab-Israeli wars when the existence of Israel (and Jews) was very fraught. Also of course there is a certain amount of myth-making around the founding of Israel. Combine that with the long history of anti-semitism and you get a community whose first instinct is to defend Israel.

In some ways I wonder if it’s not too different from Christians who constantly think they are being persecuted for their beliefs in America having outsized influence on society.

However there are a growing number of American Jews who understand that, sadly, they have to choose between their democratic pluralist values and supporting Israel. [/quote]
