Wow. 11 pages in and we are still defining striver. I think there are a lot of defensive strivers posting here. In some social circles, the stereotypical striver characteristics are admirable. In many, they are not. Believe it or not, it is possible to be extremely smart while also having a social life, people skills, and interests away from academia. So many people here act like any college kid who goes to parties and has fun is a slacker. Nope. They are actually better. Because they can maintain good grades AND have fun. Perhaps you should try it. Or stop insulting those who are capable of doing this. Just because they don't wear their intellect on their sleeves and they have fun doesn't make them dumb.
+1 lots of folks on this thread seem to be oblivious to the fact that they and their DC’s are menaces.
And a lot of other folks on this thread think their way of thinking is the only way to live and judge everyone else for it. Some of us don’t have daddy’s money or our skin color or gender to fall back on
Not sure what any of those things have to do with being a douche. One can work hard and achieve without being one. Those who can’t get judged. But you do you.
Your assessment of whether someone is a douche appears to be how much or how little they act like a white guy. You seem to enjoy judging people but don’t like being judged yourself
Why are you making this racial? Lots of white strivers. Lots of non-white non-strivers. One can be a smart, over-achiever without being obnoxious about it. That's what this is all about. Work hard, participate in class, engage with professors, get good grades. Those are all good things. But when someone takes it to the extreme with sucking up, publicly advertising their grades and how smart they think they are, and having no interests but academics, it is annoying and those are people that many of us don't want to be around. Just chill out and act like you've been there before. Not that hard. It is all very simple. Unclear why some people are so defensive.
You’re being deliberately obtuse if you think striver on this board means anything other than Asians.
NP: I'm Asian and I am offended by what you are saying. The other posters have made it very clear that though there are many Asian strivers, there are many strivers who are not Asian. You are making us look bad with your ignorance.
I’m sure you are who you claim to be and but I’ll say that just because a small minority say they use it a different way doesn’t cleanse it - it’s a racially coded slur and you’re excusing it.
