PTA meeting tonight and I plan to ask when/how they will get family feedback about the 2 ELA modeled for next year’s 5th grade (because my kid is in 4th). I expect a vague non-answer, but at least it will put a bug in other parent’s ears a out what is coming
How did it go at the PTA meeting? Did you Delegate share information about this from the MCCPTA curriculum committee and gifted Ed committee?
What is the MCCPTA curriculum committee and gifted committee doing on this? Sounds like you are looped in, can you share?
They are the ones that fought to get ELC in all schools, and usually are on in the loop on where things like this stand. Ask you PTA Delegate or President.
I know they used to be active on this in the past but I have heard zero from them on it this year, no one's even brought it up in the gifted committee Facebook group I don't think. Doesn't sound like anyone there cares anymore...
I specifically remember them putting out a call for elementary school parents last year on this issue, and as far as I could tell from the post, no one volunteered. Like everything else, the gifted Ed committee is made up of volunteers. If this issue is important to you personally, you can be one of those volunteers. In fact, I would strongly recommend that early elementary parents in particular get up to speed and active in the hopes of changing the situation in time for their kids.
Where was this call? I can’t go to our school’s PTA meetings because they are always on the same night of the week that I have a conflict. I am exactly the type of parent who would be all over this and I do not remember seeing this at all. I would be happy to devote time and energy if it actually makes a difference. We have people who are on the like SN committee for example but they just seem to listen and report back.
Have you reached out to your PTA and let them know they should send out info to the entire school community as everyone might not make the meeting? Have you considered running for your PTA’s be or to be the Delegate? Have you reached out to your schools Gifted Liaison (every ES and MS) is supposed to have one? The BOE was pretty upset about the amount of n parents and diversity of those who were included in the eval for Secondary ELA curriculum. Maybe reach out to you district representatives and let them know what ways Central and PTAs can use to reach more people
Thank you I signed up for the gifted listserve, so maybe that will be helpful. Our PTA meetings have very detailed minutes but they usually just recap the events that happened and are upcoming and go through the budget. What is a gifted liaison? Is that a PTA position or through the school?
Each PTA is supposed to have a gifted liaison (or two) to serve as a resource for the school community.
Yes but that is going to be PTA dependent. There is ( or should be) a school designated Gifted Specialist.
The liaison is usually the AP, but for ELA I would turn to the reading specialist first.
