At this point it's political suicide to stand up to Trump. The only Democrats who survive in elected office will be the ones who cooperate and help him with his agenda. Sad but true.
Absolutely wrong and tone deaf.
Tone deaf to dcurbanmoms, but right on with the national electorate. Approval ratings for Democrats have plunged during Trump's two months in office. Trump's ratings have slipped a little too, but nothing like what's happened to Democrats. We struggle to grok it here in DC, but "all the craziness" of Trump's first 60 days have HELPED Republicans relative to Democrats. The numbers don't lie. Back in calmer times, Republicans and Democrats worked together. Think of Ronald Reagan and Tip O'Neill. But now Democrats have been "fighting" for 8 years, and the voters' response was to deliver Trump every single swing state and for every Demographic group to shift toward Republicans. The number of voters who want Democrats to just obstruct for the next four years is too small to deliver election victories to Democrats. I understand the calculus that many Democratic office holders are using. They know that Trump hate is the most important motivation for the most active Democrats. And they are afraid of being primaried from the Left. BUT...they aren't going to be able to win general elections if they do nothing but obstruct. They won't be able to win back the flyover state folks and independents and soccer moms if they reject the message those voters just sent--that they want populist Republicanism right now, not establishment Democratic obstructionism.
Republicans for years having voted No on almost everything. Congress has the lowest approval rating and each year it continues to be lower. So Democrats should just vote No or be absent. Stop with the propaganda that all these folk want populist Republicanism. It’s a lie. What most people want and desire is an ALTERNATIVE. Quite frankly I expect more people to become Independents.
That just means checked out at this point. I expect people to vote one way or another based on their wallet, not worry so much about belonging to one party or another
The voters consistently report trusting Republicans more with the economy than they trust Democrats. We've gotten awfully excited about the stock market backing down 10% off its highs. We're hoping that an economic downturn will make people wish they had voted for Kamala Harris. I would argue that's an unlikely outcome. That's not really how human psychology works. And hope is not a strategy. What are we going to DO, other than loudly wish for the American people to suffer a recession? (which is obviously not a great look. they know we want power, but do we have to be SO obvious about wanting Americans to suffer for daring to oppose us?)
No we don’t want “power” you disingenuous fool. We want to protect our country and the citizens from a con man who will sell us all out.
Wishing for everyone who disagrees with you to suffer doesn't exactly sound like you want to "protect" the country. It sounds like you're mad you didn't get want you want and want to hurt people now in response, or at least you hope they get hurt. Democrats try to claim the moral high ground on everything, but your true colors show every time you don't get what you want. You don't actually care about people. You wear a costume of caring about people as part of your strategy. But the mask slips when you're angry.
Yep. And it's very telling that these Democrats are wishing for economic collapse right now at the beginning of Trump's term. Democrats CAN'T "protect the country" right now, because they are out of power. So they either want people to be punished for their votes, or they want a collapse so bad it will justify another one of their undemocratic attempts to remove Trump without having to beat him in a fair election.
Yeah, eff Trump. You misunderstand me. The democrats frustrate me in many ways. That doesn't mean I can't see that Trump is a criminal, and likely a Russian asset, intent on destroying our democracy. I just also think Democrats can't effectively oppose him because they have their own sh!t. I'm tired of the red team blue team game. None of these people give a damn about the average American.
If Democrats are so bad, what are you upset that Trump is tearing down everything Democrats built, from EPA to Ed to NLRB to CFPB and Medicare to Medicaid Social Security or ACA? If the democracy was a complete failure, why are you so protective of it?
This is the best admin I can recall in a long time. He's doing what should be done that's why most Dems aren't standing up to him.
It is AMAZING how he cornered Democrats into vehemently opposing audits, transparency, fraud reduction, waste reduction, cost-cutting, and layoffs for federal workers who haven't faced layoffs for 30 years and haven't had to come into the office for 5 years. Everyone in America knows the federal government is inefficient. Everyone in America knows they aren't getting much value for their federal income taxes. And the Democrats, in their "fierce opposition" to Trump, took the most unpopular positions imaginable. "Audits like this should be illegal! The voters don't deserve to see where their money is going! The federal government IS efficient, and doesn't need ANY reform! All federal workers deserve lifetime tenure! They should never have to send an email about what they're working on!" In my humble opinion, the way Democrats have responded to the audits and attempts to reduce fraud and waste have been more destructive to Democratic electoral prospects than ANYTHING Joe Biden did. I think the recent positioning is so bad that it makes 10 million illegals and men in girls' sports seem like no big deal in comparison. Democrats in government have let it be known that they feel entitled to ALL the taxpayer money, forever. I cannot imagine them recovering from this any time soon. Chuck Schumer and Elizabeth Warren and Maxine Waters "protesting" audits and cost-cutting? The Republican midterm ads are already made.
+1 An interesting read that corresponds to your point: Congress Has Only Itself to Blame for DOGE "For decades, both parties have treated spending oversight as a talking point rather than an actual constitutional responsibility. Lawmakers of all stripes have been too distracted by partisan brawls and endless campaigns to do the unglamorous work of following the money. The result? Billions in spending that no one—especially the lawmakers—can fully explain." https://www.liberalpatriot.com/p/congress-has-only-itself-to-blame
You don't get it. Wasteful government spending is a feature, not a bug, of our current system of government (and is the same around the world). It's often how things we want get done by those who need their backs scratched.
