If you read between the lines from the statements from their kids, they said specifically that Gene Hackman had been "physically" well.  They didn't say anything about mentally.  So he may not have been capable of making a phone call.  His wife was his kids' age so they might not have thought that her death was a remote possibility.  And, I mean, dropping dead at 63 is not unheard of but is somewhat unusual.[/quote]
