At the end of the day, she got herself into this—whatever we think of what 'this' means within this context. If that husband of hers had told her he was night shift manager at McDonald's , would she have married him? Sometimes, gold-digging works out swimmingly.Sometimes, it does but with a hefty tag attached to it. She's a prisoner of her own making.
I don't think she did get herself into this. She was born into it. And it's entirely possible that she would have married him if he was a night shift manager at Mcdonald's. Crazily enough, I (former Mormon) know a Mormon woman who turned down a lucrative position as a ballerina in NYC (this was 17 years ago and she said she was going to get paid 160K or something!!) to get married and live in Provo, Utah. I met her at a little ballet studio I went to for ballet workout classes. She had a baby and was a SAHM. I don't remember what her husband did but it certainly wasn't impressive and couldn't pay for childcare or a decent ballet experience for her. I was sad that she had to bring her fussy baby to the studio sometimes because she didn't have childcare and thought her husband kind of awful, but it never occurred to me that she made a mistake in choosing marriage and kids over a career. At that time the church was just constantly drilling into our heads from the time we could understand words that a woman choosing a career over marriage and kids was the epitome of selfishness and basically a sin. Nobody has to feel bad for these women but it's not like they really wanted to give up their dreams to have babies. They were pressured into it. Also, Hannah wasn't gold-digging. He pursued her, in an extremely aggressive manner from the looks of it.
Her beauty was a curse. He was struck by it and doggedly pursued her for six months. It’s very hard for a 21 year old girl to resist a wealthy man giving her that kind of attention. Yes, I don’t believe she chose this.
