You could move.
Op - moving is not an option. Our jobs are here. I just want to try and find the balance between pushing my kids to excel and giving them space to enjoy their childhood. It seems like everyone around here does the first option to the detriment of the second.
At least acknowledge that your kids are already starting on third base. Some people who push their kids are starting at bat. - privileged white person who doesn't push her kids to excel a whole lot but also recognizes all the privileges they already have which is what allows me to be so laid back about that stuff
Yeah I don’t need to push my kids. They are naturally smart and athletic. They have a very happy childhood. OP, it sounds like your kids may not have the nature part of this equation. Not trying to be mean. Being at the top 10-20% of their class to get into AAP is not something you push. If your kid is smart, s/he would have been selected. If your kid is naturally athletic and enjoys soccer or basketball, by age 8, they will naturally move to a more competitive team. If the kid wants to be good in a competitive league, it is natural to do additional skills training, private coaching, etc no matter the sport. It is ok to be average. Not everyone can be at the top or elite. Just AAP or travel soccer is pretty average around here.
