The renaming is a done deal even though it seems like the majority people didn’t want it. It’s was a done deal when this school board was elected. So Let’s move on. What’s the next FCPS school to be renamed? What SB candidates want to continue to rename schools of racist people?
I'm all for renaming all of them. No children of color should be forced to go to schools named for racists and segregationists. PERIOD.
In that case, TJ should be renamed ASAP. Far more egregious than Woodson.
Totally different cases. TJ was a Founding Father from the 1700s. W.T. Woodson is an old man of little consequence who was still a racist in the 1980s.
You are right, it is a totally different case. TJ was a known and proud slave owner who reportedly raped his slaves and fathered unwanted children with them W.T. Woodson was an old man who served the community that researchers had to dig deep to find an obscure letter where he wanted to delay desegregation, but then ultimately oversaw the successful integration of the school district.
I realize this is the official line among some loons but do you actually believe any of this? Has reason failed you to such an extent?
So what is the reality to believe? Are you disputing that TJ owned slaves? It is well documented that he was a proud southern plantation owner who owned quite a few slaves. The rape and fathering of children? Fine, we don't have to get hung up on that. But I don't think it is loony to believe TJ was a slave owner. That is a solid fact. So, according to the criteria outlined above, it should therefore disqualify him from having a public institution, and especially a school, named after him. Being a Founding Father and primary author of the Declaration of Independence doesn't absolve him. It didn't for Madison. As for Woodson, whether he was a racist or not, he oversaw the integration of the school district. So, assuming he was a racist, he set his privately held personal beliefs aside and did the right thing. Is being a long serving superintendent grounds to have a school named after yourself? I don't know. But to claim the name of the school has racist roots is disingenuous at best. We aren't talking about the naming of institutions for Lee and other Confederates in an attempt to create an underlying racist tone as was done in the 50's and 60's. Renaming those schools, streets, etc., is justified. Just be honest with the motivation and rationale. Rename, or don't rename. But if the standard is no racist, no slave owner, so that no POC should have to enter a school building named after such a historical figure, then apply it consistently.
Are you stupid or something? No one disputes this. And I'm laughing at those of you using him as an example while utterly refusing to concede why changing Jefferson's name on things will ever happen. Should it as a matter of principle? I would say yes. But as the stature he has in this country is the one of the most revered, it's just not happening. You know this. I suspect you're just trying to bait people into trying to remove him from things so YOU can score cultural or political points. But, it isn't happening in any sort of real or mainstream way. Sorry.
DP, but you do know that you are completely full of crap, right? FCCPS already renamed a school named after Thomas Jefferson. He was just as "revered" then as now (perhaps even more so). No reason for it not to happen eventually in FCPS as well. His historic transgressions make W.T. Woodson look like a saint.
Full of crap for pointing out TJ's status and why that is not happening (which is true). That's not crap, it's true. And, see bolded. The fact that a single school had the balls to do so is not indicative of any mainstream or significant movement to change names with TJ attached to them. Fact. So one of us is full of crap but it's you.
The only reason they aren't changing the name of TJHSST is that the school is prestigious, and changing the name would be viewed by some as stripping the school of some of its prestige at a time when more non-Asian minorities are getting into the school. What shows how transactional this all tends to be. By not admitting that, you're the one that's full of crap.
