During the Marion Barry years in DC I was/had: held up at gunpoint in Columbia heights. Moved. Two radios stolen out of my car in Woodley and windows smashed twice. Moved. Held up at knifepoint to gain entry to apartment building Connecticut avenue Cleveland park. Moved further north to Chevy Chase DC. Neighbor had all belongings stolen and evidently loaded into trucks and taken away from alley in back of house. I stayed on in chase and bought my home. Marion Barry gone. No problems with theft or attacks in my neighborhood until Muriel Bowser in recent years. Now, carjacking at gunpoint broad daylight of neighbor in broad daylight. Shooting down the street at Connecticut and brandywine. Carjacking at gunpoint on my running route over on 43rd near friendship (changed my route now) in broad daylight. Attempted carjacking in last 10 days on Connecticut avenue near the circle at 7:00 am (bumped the car, neighbor got out to exchange insurance, was attacked by 3 men). Multiple incidents of neighbors’ service people having car windows smashed in attempt to find something to steal. Some service people, plumbers etc, refusing to come to Chevy chase now because of so much crime……. Several random attacks by obviously mentally ill people on bystanders or walkers on Connecticut avenue….. Recall Muriel Bowser.
I've lived in cities all across the country. I've never before experienced so much random, reckless, and violent crime. I'm now carrying a concealed firearm. You can have my car, my cell phone, my credit cards, and any other thing you want. But I am getting home to my family at the end of the day. This city seems more worried about the wellbeing of criminals than law-abiding citizens. The most important job of government is protecting the safety of residents. The city doesn't have the stomach for it, so I have to do it myself. I'm a lifelong democrat. I believe in sensible gun control. I'm not a "gun nut." What we have here are not Democratic policies. Democrats don't believe in lawlessness. Parents don't believe in lawlessness. I pray I never have to use it. I can't imagine having to take a life.
