My brothers mother in law is 84 and has never worked one single hour in her life or went to college She got married a few months after HS and moved in with her husband a mechanic for an airline who was 20. She is still married. Her youngest moved out in 1990. She also does zero volunteer work and was not involved in any kids activities.
Did she provide for the family in other ways (ie: mental stimulation, ex: truly gifted cook, active in groups or hobbies)? I could not imagine just sitting like a vegetable in front of television all day. I think such a thing is difficult for active people to comprehend. D.C. seems to attract many low energy people, for some reason.
She does not have friends, not active in any groups and barely cooks. Here was a day once described to me from 30 years ago when husband worked. Get up have breakfast husband make him brown bag lunch, she then like to take a walk, come home nap, get up do a few very minor things have dinner husband. Her husband managed all bills, did every home repair, mowed lawn, took care cars. Worked full time. She did no gardening or even ever had a pet. Her nearest relative was 3,000 miles away so no parties or things
Did they have a full-time housekeeper and cook? Because if not, she likely cooked, as you described, and cleaned.
