God isn't "picking a winner" nor is their prayer asking for that. If a player believes that following the path of their religion and focusing their thoughts on prayer helps them to be the best they can be in practice and on the field (and it is easy to see how that could help an individual), and that helped their team to win, they can thank God for that. That doesn't mean God picked the other team to lose. Speaking in terms like that ("God let you lose") simply shows that you are being obtusely literal and do not understand what God is and is not to a religious person.
