Is ice skating notorious for injuries?  I grew up and Canada so I ice skated a lot as a child, and go pretty regularly with my own children and their friends. I've taught a lot of kids to skate.  Outside of hockey (which is notorious for injuries), I've never been at a rink or on an outdoor skating surface, and seen an injury that needed more than a few minutes off the ice and some hot chocolate to cheer the child up.  I've seen really scary ski accidents, and known kids who had scary ski accidents.  I've seen kids taken off by ambulance from the trampoline park, and the playground, and the playing field.  I've known a kid with a broken foot because he dropped a bowling ball on it, and a kid in the hospital from a near drowning, and several biking accident.

The first time I went ice skating, the person who took me ended up bleeding copiously on the ice while I looked on in horror.  Years later, after taking lessons, I injured my knee. So, no ambulances, but two injuries that took more than hot chocolate to heal.

In your own experiences it seems as though someone knowledgeable and skilled has been available to the beginners — including you as a teacher. One issue is that this might not be the case with a skating party.  15 kids might include a dozen or more beginners, who don’t know how to size or safely lace their skates, let alone how to navigate a possibly crowded rink without help.

I’d add to your list: make sure that enough people who know what they’re doing are available to help those who don’t. [/quote]
