It wasn't until the white evangelicals lost the desegregation battle, the conservatives realized that they were the minority and that they were losing the battle of messaging in the US because they didn't have a unified platform. So the evangelical right zeroed in on abortion as the rallying cry and since the late 1970's they have used that to unify the conservative party.
