Maybe it depends on where and CA, and when you graduated from high school...I think as the UCs have gotten so very competitive a lot of CA students look to OOS schools- and the CSUs aren't appealing to many students for a variety reasons. But I graduated from a public HS in San Diego County in 2007, so pretty recently probably compared to many on this forum, and I remember a LOT of my classmates going to U of Arizona, ASU, U of Utah, CU Boulder/CSU, Oregon...and a number to flagships like Wisconsin and Michigan.
