Week 8 - 2022 VA Boys Public 6A “Unofficial” Rankings 1. Robinson (14-0) Results: Def. West Springfield 20-3 Analysis: Robinson runs the table and looks unstoppable. This is one of the strongest public school teams in recent memory. Expect a few more easy wins until the rematch with Lake Braddock in the district finals. Lake Braddock needs to go back to the drawing board to come up with a plan to slow Robinson’s offense down. It won’t be easy. Up this week: vs. Fairfax (5/9) 2. Patriot (11-2) Results: Def. John Champe 20-6, vs. Mountain View 16-3, Def. #2 Battlefield 8-6 Analysis: Battlefield’s stingy defense held Patriot’s high powered offense to its second lowest goal total of the season, but Patriot’s defense stepped up and shut Battlefield’s offense down, holding Battlefield to its lowest goal total of the season. Patriot jumps ahead because of the recency effect as head-to-head wins at the end of the season matter more. Patriot’s earlier loss to Riverside is not held against them as they played arguably the #1 or #2 team in the state to a close game and that kind of challenge can only help a team get ready for the playoffs (and, as others noted, Riverside would beat Battlefield also). Up this week: vs. John Champe (5/11) 3. Battlefield (11-1) Results: Def. Osbourn 17-2, Lost to #3 Patriot 8-6 Analysis: These two teams are so evenly matched that it is a pick ‘em every time they play. They will likely see each other at least two more times, and it is anyone’s guess as to who will come out on top. There is no shame in falling to the #3 spot as these two teams are essentially 2a and 2b. Up this week: vs. Freedom South Riding (5/11) 4. Madison (10-3) Results: Def. #10 Westfield 13-4 Analysis: Madison rolled #10 Westfield by a similar margin as Robinson and Battlefield did and closes the season with a seven game winning streak, during which they beat their opponents by almost 12 goals per game. Still looking strong heading into the playoffs and will be a tough out for anyone. Arguments can be made for Lake Braddock and Yorktown to be in the #4 spot, but again we are looking for teams peaking at the right time and Madison is hot right now. Up this week: TBD 5. Lake Braddock (12-2) Results: Def. South County 18-8 Analysis: Lake Braddock had a nice bounce back against a decent South County team that is better than its record reflects. LB needs to figure out how to contend with Robinson but can’t look too far ahead and slip up and not make it to the district finals. They are prone to playing some teams closer than necessary when not at the top of their game (e.g., Oakton and McLean). Up this week: vs. West Springfield (5/9) 6. Yorktown (10-3) Results: Def. Chantilly 12-1, Def. Marshall 13-3 Analysis: Yorktown crushed Chantilly and Marshall and despite the setback to Langley looks like a dangerous playoff team. Yorktown’s path to the district championship will likely be through Wakefield and then McLean. Up this week: vs. Wakefield (5/10), with a win, vs. winner of McLean/Marshall (5/13) 7. Langley (8-3) Results: Def. Wakefield 25-5 Analysis: Langley came out of nowhere to put up the highest goal total of any Class 6 team this season. They finished Liberty district play undefeated and get the first round bye. Langley will likely need to beat Herndon again on Friday to set up a rematch with Yorktown in the district championship. Up this week: 1st Round Bye, vs. winner of Herndon/Washington Liberty (5/13) 8. Freedom South Riding (10-4) Results: Def. Gainesville 21-1, Def. Colgan 17-1, at John Champe 19-8 Analysis: Destroyed the competition this week to finish third in the district with losses only to Patriot and Battlefield. Freedom is a solid team that can likely hang with anyone outside of the top 3. Up this week: vs. Gainesville (5/9), vs. Battlefield (5/11) 9. West Potomac: (10-4) Results: Def. Woodson 12-10 Analysis: Close win over Woodson is par for the course for this West Potomac team. Decent but not scary, they know how to win close games against mid-tier competition, they can win the Gunston district but they stand little chance of advancing in regionals past Robinson or Lake Braddock. Up this week: vs. South County (5/9) 10. Westfield (8-5) Results: Lost to #4 Madison 13-4 Analysis: Lost to a surging Madison but no one else below made enough noise to bump Westfield out of the #10 spot. As it has been all season, West Potomac, Westfield, Woodson, Alexandria City, Centreville, Oakton, and Chantilly are all essentially the same team. Up this week: at TBD Others Receiving Votes: Woodson (8-5), Alexandria City (8-8), Centreville (7-5)
