This is quite interesting. No matter how much DC/the Mayor wish out loud for more vaccine, the amount we receive is a "simple algorithm" as per the head of US vaccine distribution. https://www.wusa9.com/article/news/national/military-news/senators-share-concerns-about-covid-vaccine-distribution/65-0ad9c440-07c3-43b2-9b18-e6d01517465f "Gen. Perna responded that distribution has been based on a population algorithm. "The percentage of that population to the percentage of available vaccine being distributed that week is the algorithm that runs," Perna said. "It is strictly a mathematical problem.”"
Perhaps before we allowed the VP to have her vaccine photo op yesterday we could have first secured a commitment for more vaccines given the unique burden the District has? Do any of our electeds understand political leverage?
No kidding! But until DC secures more vaccine, we need to focus on what is...not what if. The Feds dont give a * that we are donating vaccine to our neighbors- they are alotting vaccine based on population. As Gen Pern said, "Its strictly mathematical".
Remember when the mayor broke her own stay at home policy and broke Delaware’s out of state quarantine period for Biden’s victory speech because it was “essential” travel. How’s that working out?
Not much is working out :(. DC has been allocated enough vaccine in the first 3 months to vaccinate 20% (1/5) of residents. Yet only 9% have been partially or fully vaccinated. Huh. I can only surmise residents' continued "good behavior" is what is keeping covid rates down, yet somehow it doesn't get us "early release". DC Health needs to take vaccine off the shelves and start pumping it into residents' arms. There is clearly demand since their phone and web systems keep melting down.
No, we need to have a residency requirement. I can’t go to MD and claim I’m a resident to get a vaccine without showing proof. Why are we allowing non residents who aren’t front line workers to just waltz in and grab a vaccine if they get lucky in the lottery? Why are DC hospitals allowed to give the DC doses to patients who are not DC residents?
Your statement is factually incorrect. You most certainly can be vaccinated in MD or VA if you are not a resident, assuming you are a member of the workforce that is covered under one of the current phases. So, for example, essential workers and educational workers who do not live in these states are still eligible to be vaccinated there. I got my vaccination in MD even though I am a resident of VA.
I literally said “non residents who aren’t front line workers.”
And non-residents who aren't front line workers can't get a vaccine in DC, either. So I'm not sure what your point is.
PPs point is that Mayor Bowser has allowed many (folks from Md + VA fall into the category of front-line workers, without ensuring that MD + VA uptook an equal burden. The proof is in the pudding--almost half of vaccinations have gone to non-DC residents in this manner. Half of MD and VA vaccines have certainly not gone to non-residents. She needs to spend the next month (or however long is required) only vaccinating DC residents (which includes DC resident front-line workers), until these statistics are more in whack. Once DC residents are vaccinated, she can start the great vaccine giveaway again. Maybe time it with summer tourism and people could get 2 in 1, hotel + vax deals.
