Is it true SYC’s TD is a former coach from LMVSC?
Yes
Along with some of the other directors and the majority of the Blue team coaches. Seems like they are doing well there just like they were at their prior club. There are a bunch of pages on this topic in the lmvsc thread.
Yes sir
Until they want more money and decide its time to make all their players get new uniforms. They are doing a good job and deserve what they can get.
What? Are you suggesting that to cover pay raises they will make you buy uniforms? Doesn't make any sense.
they're suggesting that a club built on TDs leaving other clubs with their teams better be prepared for them to leave again if another club with deep pockets needs a quick boost
Bingo
Ah got it but not sure that I see it with this group. They have been able to do what they always wanted to do at their prior club and more but just were never allowed to previously. I wouldn't be surprised if they didn't look to bring more quality coaches in to reinforce their staff. SYC seems to have a large player pool in comparison to nearby clubs so I would think that they would to make sure that they have high quality coaches. I'm sure the would be rewarded for the growth of the club so far and more.
they have a large player pool because coaches take players with them. If you want to gauge player pools, look at the size of their rec program, and look at how many kids are leaving other clubs to join them on their own. Neither of these seems t be spectacularly large
Totally fair statements and as a pre & post coaching change SYC parent of younger kids, here are my basic thoughts on that. There's only really been 1 offseason strangled by COVID since they got here, so the measure of people coming in (or out) isn't a terribly accurate one yet. If you only consider the first season as they were arriving, characterized by a number of kids following and not as many leaving, that's a positive, but it's a one time thing. Since many folks chose not to change clubs (both from reading this forum and talking to several coach friends), summer 2020 isn't the best measure of player movement good or bad. Maybe we'll see a difference in incoming or outgoing if there's a more normal situation this spring during tryout season, or at least with a season of getting used to covid restrictions and what that means. As for rec program - agree, this doesn't seem to be huge on it's own. I've been fascinated by the number of clubs broken down into this close area in comparison to my travel days 20 years ago, so to some extent, I think this will continue to slow down the SYC/LMVSC/Gunston, even South County group of players. Especially being closely bordered around that by Alexandria/BRYC as larger programs and even PWSI (although they're farther away and no idea if they're bigger or smaller). As for jersey's, I assume that was mostly tongue in cheek/make fun of coaches being hired guns, but the club told us 18 months ago that these jerseys were going to be for 2 years and then we'd all need to buy new ones, so if they've kept to that schedule, we should remember that and not complain too much. My kids are about to outgrow their sizes anyway, so I'm going to be stuck buying new ones either way so if they want to go adidas to nike or change the logo on the front, go for it.
Got it, post move, what do you think the club could still look to improve on to be considered a bigger club in the area? As an outsider, the club seems to have improved a lot.
It seems to me that all the bigger clubs in the area funnel into a larger/more competitive league like GA/ECNL/etc. I don't know where MLS Next stacks up for the boys since my son is just starting out, but that seems like a good start at least for the boys, not sure if there's a girls equivalent. The younger teams in general seem to be much more competitive against those larger clubs than the older teams, so I think some time to see if that holds as they get older would allow them to show results. We haven't been here long enough to know if those now U14/15/16 teams were competitive at younger ages and fell off or stayed similar development path, but either way that was in an old regime. As a general statement, I think our coaches are approachable and talented and hopefully they're enjoying it and stick around. I know social media annoys some parents and delights others, I happen to love it, but everyone has their own opinions on that. Of course social media is everyone's highlight reel of life, but the little trick shot competitions and player tik toks, etc over COVID led to more interaction for my kids with their teammates and they had a lot of fun with it. The only other thing I can think of is drumming up more interest in the rec program, expanding the neighborhood borders a little bit through that experience, getting kids involved earlier so they enjoy soccer. I think the cubs programs and mini-kickers type programs are helpful for getting kids interested in soccer early, but I think there's still a broader audience. At my kids elementary school for example, there are very few soccer players in the travel program. I don't do kids sports programs for a living, so I don't pretend to know how to get more kids involved, but as an example there seem to be a HUGE number of young kids in this area into swim teams, and many of the soccer kids seem to be on swim teams. Maybe figure out a way to get those kids into rec soccer as a building block? Outside of my wheelhouse though.
