I'm French. Many Catholics in Latin countries (which to Europeans means Italy, France, Spain and Portugal, as well as Latin America) don't see Protestants as Christians! To them, Christian=Catholic. They represent the immense majority of Christians in these countries. It's interesting that in Europe we use the term "Protestant" to designate anything that isn't Catholic. We still remember that their split from the Church was an act of protest. And I don't think many French people, or other Europeans, really know the difference between various Protestant groups. In French the saying "Ce n'est pas tres Catholique" (literally "This is not very Catholic") means "This looks fishy"  :-)
