So does anyone have any ideas if/when MoCo might re-categorize soccer from High Risk to Medium Risk?
No idea - they seem to have gone silent on this. I am in shock that they have given the go ahead to lacrosse and field hockey to play full games as long as the crowd is under 50 but are not even allowing soccer to scrimmage at practice with their own teammates.
Mark Elrich just sent an email to county residents (subject: Reopening Montgomery: An Active August) in which he says the following: "Access to athletic fields to allow youth and adult games and tournaments for low- and medium-risk sports for groups of 50 or less is being expanded by Montgomery Parks, which is part of the Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission. Fields at local parks are currently available and fields at regional and recreational parks will be available starting Tuesday, Sept. 1. Games and tournaments were canceled in March due to the COVID-19 health crisis. High-risk sports games, such as football and rugby, are not permitted at this time. Practice and skill-building drills for high-risk sports are permitted. Sports are categorized by risk by the Maryland Sports Commission Return to Play Committee Report." The Committee Report was linked and when you click on it, it's the Maryland State Sports Commission report dated June 5 that classifies soccer in the medium risk category. My read is that, although it wasn't stated explicitly, the county is now deferring to that state report??
Your reading is not correct. And yes it is very confusing. Technically speaking, soccer is medium risk sport even in Moco, but it is singled out (with an asterisk) that games are not allowed until phrase 3. It is a "medium risk" sport but being treated as "high risk" in Moco county. I do not think Elrich and Gayles even thought about it this week. They picked a bad vendor for cov19 test and was being defending themself, also they are trying hard to prevent school to open.
