University of Chicago. Signed, an ND grad.
No one is seriously disagreeing with you on this. What people are disagreeing with, I think, is the idea that ND is a prestigious school generally, and of course it is -- Catholic or not.
I'm a PP who has a degree from Northwestern and suggested that the prestige order is University of Chicago, then Northwestern, then Notre Dame. I didn't mean to slam Notre Dame or imply that there's anything wrong with Notre Dame; of course it's well-known and has some academic prestige. It just doesn't have the same kind of raw academic prestige that the University of Chicago or Northwestern has. But: - I know that trying to rank universities according to raw academic prestige is silly. The constant bashing of the University of Chicago here just irritates me. - Because of football, Notre Dame may really be the best known private university in the country, other than Harvard and MIT. In terms of regular people having hard of it, maybe it's near the top in terms of prestige. - I'm sure that Notre Dame has many first-rate programs that are doing first-rate research and turning out first-rate graduates. Bashing the University of Chicago is ignorant, but seriously looking down on Notre Dame is also foolish.
