I can't stand Trump, but he was no protector of Epstein. Trump was immediately available to talk for hours about Epstein to a reporter (? Memory is fuzzy...maybe a prosecutor?)...which was one of the first steps toward Epstein's downfall.[/quote]

Possibly. My guess is that when Epstein introduced his friends to a few of his young girlfriends, some men were probably titillated at first. And then when they realized that this was actually a vast sex trafficking enterprise with dozens of girls, and that there was no way all of them could be reasonably deemed consenting... they understood they had to disentangle themselves.
