The New York Times is reporting today that Mamdani identified himself as “Black or African American” and “Asian” in his application to Colombia. Mamdani confirmed it in an interview. https://www.nytimes.com/2025/07/03/nyregion/mamdani-columbia-black-application.html
I mean he was born in Africa
He admits in the interview that he has never otherwise put himself forth as “African American.”
My kids’ friends who have moved to the US still consider themselves part of the country they were born in. My daughter’s boyfriend is Peruvian even though he came here at seven. Some friends are from Brazil, Colombia, and Guatemala. They will always be seen as Latinas because of their dark skin even though they’re now Americans. It makes no sense why he should ignore living half of his childhood as an African because of his skin color.
