As a parent with a high schooler and middle schooler, I wish someone had told my older kids’ teams that all this talk of record for a seventh grade team feels misplaced. Girls still growing a lot. Some of the best players will stay that way but more often than not, the field will change by high school based on size, injury etc. And a lot of times, most lacrosse parents can’t see the forest for the trees. Also this ridiculous NCAA settlement is going to change the nature of recruiting for any conference a school that opts in. Lots more lacrosse scholarships which sounds good on paper but I worry that coaches are going to rely much more heavily on the portal now. Why take a chance on an high school athlete when you can get a hungry bench sitter from Duke? Ivies didn’t opt in but you better have the grades and test scores or they won’t take her (just ask all the junior recruits retaking the SAT after their commitment was announced.) my kid saw five at the test recently.
We are just talking about our girls playing lacrosse. I don't think anyone is taking it seriously. What is going on with the NCAA settlement?
With all due respect, if this is the way you are “just talking about your girls playing lacrosse” it is too result-focused and catty, esp for middle school. I try to remember that maybe people wouldn’t actually talk like this IRL and then I go to my younger daughter’s games and hear wild comments on the sideline. As for NCAA settlement, not final but current version has scholarship spots increasing for women’s lacrosse from 12 to 30 (most people think this will allow coaches to offer current players more rather than create room for HS bc rosters are capped). Also likely to eliminate walkons bc rosters are capped. Olympic sports and men’s sports beyond the revenue generators are being decimated. Football basketball etc getting huge bumps. Schools have to opt in. Ivies did not. My take is power conferences are not looking out for athletes but rather revenue.
