I just have to ask Lee parents – are you really ok with WLA co-locating with your space? I am totally happy for Lee that it got a great space, but I worry it came at the expense of co-locating with a school that is a total unknown. I spent some time reading WLAs charter – have any Lee parents done this yet? This is a school whose operating principles, particularly when it comes to discipline, seem at odds with a Montessori model. The children being targeted for recruitment are 9th graders from wards 7 and 8 who are at-risk youth with behavioral issues and require remedial education. This school being co-located with Lee could make the whole campus an area that attracts some serious hanging out and loitering issues. Are Lee parents worried? Has the school talked to parents about this issue? Meetings with WLA? I would be very concerned about how being co-located with a school targeting at risk teens will impact Lee’s future recruitment efforts, as well as retention efforts. I just worry that the good news about Lee getting a great space is overshadowing the bigger issue of an unknown high school sharing the space.
I can't tell if this is sincere or concern trolling. Maybe a bit of both.
It is actually sincere concern. I really don't get it. My kids go to ITS, which has had a great experience being co-located with Lee. I would really worry about the overall campus area becoming a loitering ground for high school kids before and after school. Or maybe that is just something the neighbors should be worried about.
You know where high schoolers don't want to hang out? At school.
+1. I honestly don't think it will be an issue. We are at ITS we well and yes we have enjoyed being co-located with Lee. I also remember being co-located with Potomac Lighthouse on Taylor and the other Charter Alternative High school when on Florida (they were technically the same building as they had a shared bridge that connected as well as shared the alley). At no point in time did the kids ever cross paths and if they did (when our kids were walking around during school day discovering the neighborhood), there was never an issue. Honestly, these kids are not who you think they will be. Majority of them polite, kind kids that like little kids. At risk doesn't equal danger IMO. I am thrilled for Lee. Kind of jealous they only have to move one time. Congrats Lee!
