We have spending issues and for a family of 3 (2yr old kid) we spend over $1,200 at Trader Joes and Whole Foods. She refuses to shop at regular grocery stores. I bet it would cut our bill by $250-300 if she just went to Giant.
If it is $1200 a month divide that by 4 weeks and that is only $300 a week. I think the cost is reasonable but if you don't, you do the shopping for what your household needs and then you can see what the totals are. Time, convenience, and gas are also factors. Having a young child, I can see why organic food may be of importance to your wife. In a marriage, pick and choose your battles. Do you have cable? Cell phone? Etc.? There are plenty of ways to cut costs in daily living. As long as she is making healthy food choices for your family, I would recommend looking elsewhere to cut costs.
We spend $400 per month for a family of three - and we eat fresh vegetables and home cooked meals every single day.
