We got in the habit as kids. I trained my kids from when they were potty-trained. I would give them a sippy-cup of milk in bed, and after they had had their milk, I would make them sit on the potty until they pooped.
Okay but watch out - my DH was raised this way and the long stretches on the toilet meant that he now has hemorrhoids, poor guy.
?? Seems like his diet may not be very high in fiber. Lots of fruits, veggies, water, probiotics (like yogurt, kimchi) will ensure that you poop easily and quickly. Straining to poop is not a good thing. Have him use a step-stool to change his posture while pooping, or use a squatty potty. http://www.amazon.com/Squatty-Potty-Ecco-Toilet-Stool/dp/B007BISCT0/ref=sr_sp-atf_title_1_1?s=baby-products&ie=UTF8&qid=1391096255&sr=1-1
