Schools don't rank you in DC. The link from the Post described New Orleans.
Yes they do. They're called preferences and they along with a random number assignment determine your position in the algorithm.
Preferences are something completely different from school rankings.
No they aren't. The school puts each kid into a pool of applicants pool 1 (Sibling) pool 2 (Proximity) pool 3 (No Pref) within each of those pools they create tiebreakers (some kind of random number assignments). Those tiebreaks are used to rank the children within the pools. This is the same in NYC, New Orleans, Denver and in DC.
I don't know about New Orleans or Denver, but that's not how it works in DC. First, the schools don't do anything. It says so clearly on the FAQ:
Will the schools be able to see how I ranked them? No. My School DC will not give this information to schools.
The schools don't "create tiebreakers." Every participant is given one lottery number for the entire process. Spots at each school are given out first by order of preference, then by lottery number.
When there are more students than spaces at a school, students who have a preference (such as a sibling preference) will be the first to be offered spaces. Then, random selection decides which other students will be offered spaces. Students will be matched with no more than one school. My School DC will try to match each student with their 1st choice, then their 2nd choice, and so on through the student’s list.
