Lunchables are food. Crappy food, for a lot of reasons, but announcing that they aren't food is shorthand for "I am privileged and smug beyond belief about it."
I agree with you. Lunchables most definitely contain food, and the smugness is overwhelming and more nauseating than all the processed pasteurized cheese food product in the world. However... Cicadas are food. Blood straight from the open vein of a cow is food. We all make choices. It IS curious to me that so many people choose this particular food.
Well, the people who are choosing this food are kids, mostly, who are known for their love of cheap thrills for the tastebuds (salt! sugar! fat!) and a fascination with the gizmo (separate compartments! add powder to water!). When I was a kid, I loved TV dinners, especially these kid-specific ones. Even at the time, I knew they tasted bad, but there was something about that dried-out fried chicken and hot chocolate pudding in the box with the zebra on it that sucked me in. And now I am all about the farmer's markets and the grass-fed beef. My kids (who sometimes get Lunchables) seem to be following the same path.
