Fairfax has actually experienced a drop in violent crime in recent years and has consistently ranked as the safest (or one of the safest) jurisdictions of its size in the US. I'm having trouble believing this is a legitimate investigation...sounds like a witch hunt.
Two things can be true. You can have a drop in violent crime and you can have a prosecutor who makes terrible decisions. It is also possible that violent crime is not being charged and prosecuted. That makes stats look better. Remember, we are only seeing the most extreme cases in the news. How many are unreported?
There have already been reports that charges are dropped or reduced for some of the suspects because witnesses didn't want to testify. None of this means anything. All the details are so high level. This isn't a good-faith investigation. As a separate but related matter, ICE can call up and find out when people are getting released. They aren't barred from any jails in Fairfax County. This isn't an insurmountable problem. If they have to wait a few hours on release day, so be it.
1. ICE has to be told the person is in custody and being released.. 2. The sheriff has said she will release anyone to ICE who has a "judicial warrant." That requires time and red tape that should not be necessary. If an undocumented alien has committed a crime, they should be turned over. Period.
You know where you don't need a judicial warrant? In the parking lot of the jail or courthouse. Mere steps from the facility.
And, these arrests are far more dangerous to the agents involved, the illegal alien, and the community as a whole. The agents have no way to be sure that the migrant is not armed. It takes far more agents to make an arrest outside the courthouse than taking him/her into custody IN the courthouse. As an example, here is video of an arrest outside a courthouse in Massachusetts. It takes 5 agents to subdue this guy. And, these arrests attract a crowd that is dangerous for everyone involved.
